Cardiff sits under the marine layer most of the year. Morning humidity runs 70-80%, and that changes how a dryer vent behaves. Damp lint does not drift out the hood the way dry lint does — it sticks to the duct wall and packs down layer by layer. Cycles get longer, the laundry room gets warmer, and clothes come out still heavy. The salt air works on the outside of the system at the same time, corroding exterior vent hoods and seizing termination flaps until they stop closing or stop opening. Drive fifteen minutes inland to Escondido or San Marcos and the problem inverts: 90-100F summers, chaparral pollen, and Santa Ana events that push dust into ducts from the outside in. The calls we get in Cardiff and along the coastal strip fall into a few patterns. The 1970s-90s tracts put the laundry room inside and route the duct through attic space, so lint collects at every elbow and transition. Newer two- and three-story production homes and townhomes have second-floor laundry with long attic or roof-terminated runs, and those are the ones that quietly choke. On site, the crew checks airflow at the exterior hood before touching anything, so there is a real number to compare against. Then a rotary brush on a flexible vent line runs the length of the duct from the appropriate end, with a vacuum capturing what comes loose instead of blowing it into the room. We pull the dryer, clear the transition hose, clean the hood and free the flap, reconnect, and read airflow at the hood again. You see both readings. Sometimes the second number is barely different from the first, and that means the vent did not need clearing yet. We tell people that and we do not invent work. What moves the cost on this job is the length and routing of the run, whether it terminates at the roof, how much has to be moved to reach the dryer, and the state of the hood after years of salt air. A garage wall vent and a third-floor roof run are not the same job.
