My laundry is on the back porch of a 1930s North Park bungalow — why does the dryer take forever?

Older bungalows in North Park, Normal Heights, and Kensington were not built with laundry in mind. There's no basement to run a duct through, so when a washer and dryer got added to a back porch or a converted service area, the vent usually took whatever path was available: a long run along a wall, a couple of hard turns, or a climb into an attic before it finds daylight. Long, bent runs collect lint faster than a straight one. That's normally what's behind a dryer that needs two or three cycles to finish a load. We check the whole route, not just the last few feet behind the machine.

Does the coastal marine layer actually affect lint buildup?

It plays a part. Closer to the coast, mornings hold damp air, and damp lint packs into the duct wall and clings instead of blowing out. Inland toward the canyons the air is drier and dustier, so buildup there tends to be looser but mixes with fine dust that coats the duct interior. Neither is a crisis on its own. But they do mean two homes the same age in different parts of the city can look different inside the vent.

What goes wrong most often in San Diego homes?

A few patterns repeat. Detached-garage laundry in the older neighborhoods often has duct running underground or along an exterior wall, with joints that have separated over the decades. Postwar Clairemont and Serra Mesa ranches usually have garage laundry with a short run out through the exterior wall, which is the best case. But the exterior flap gets stuck open or broken off, and birds and dust get in. Condos in Mission Valley and downtown have the dryer in an interior stacked closet with a sidewall termination, and those runs are often longer than the owner expects and share a wall cavity, so lint has more places to settle. Crushed flexible duct behind the machine is common everywhere.

How soon can you get out here, and do you do same-day?

Same-day happens fairly often, especially for mid-week bookings, though it depends on where you are and what's already on the route. San Diego traffic makes geography matter more than distance, so a downtown or Mission Valley condo scheduled in the same block as another job is easier to slot in than a one-off across town at rush hour. If it's not urgent, booking a day or two out usually gets you a better time window. Condos with an interior stacked closet fall in between: the run isn't always long, but getting to it means working in a tight closet and confirming the sidewall termination is actually clear.
