My dryer is by the beach and the vent hood outside looks rusted shut. Is that normal here?

Near the coastal strip it's one of the most common things we find. Salt air corrodes the metal flapper hoods and the screws holding them. Once the louvers seize partway open or partway shut, lint packs behind them and stays damp. On the older bungalows and military-era homes around the pier and Fire Mountain, the original hood is often the one that's still there. We clean the duct from both ends, but if the termination is corroded to the point that the flaps won't move freely, we'll tell you straight that cleaning alone won't fix the airflow. The hood needs replacing.

Why does my laundry come out damp even on a long cycle?

Two Oceanside patterns cause most of it. In the Rancho Del Oro and Ocean Hills tracts, second-floor interior laundry rooms run up through the attic and out the roof or a high sidewall, and those long runs collect lint at every elbow. Combine that with marine humidity, and the lint doesn't stay powdery. It clumps and sticks to the duct wall instead of blowing through. The other pattern is the opposite: short garage or converted-porch runs where the duct is fine but the exterior hood is blocked. Either way, the dryer is fighting back pressure, so it runs longer and still leaves clothes heavy.

We just moved into a rental near Camp Pendleton. Should we get the vent checked before we use the dryer?

Yes, and it's a good idea on any home here with turnover. Duct condition in this area varies more than almost anything else we see. One unit will have been serviced recently, the next has years of buildup because no one owner stayed long enough to think about it. You can't judge it from the lint trap. We'd rather look and find it clean than have you run loads through a packed attic run all winter.

How soon can someone actually come out?

Most Oceanside jobs get scheduled within a few days. If your dryer has stopped drying entirely or you're smelling something hot, say so when you call and we'll work you into the earliest slot we have. Same-day does happen, usually when there's a cancellation or when we already have a truck working the coastal side of town that day, but we won't promise it on the phone unless we can deliver it.

What makes one Oceanside house cost more than another?

Mostly where the laundry sits and how far the air has to travel. A garage or converted-porch setup in one of the older beach bungalows with a short wall run through to the outside is the simplest work we do here. A second-floor interior laundry in one of the 1980s-2000s tracts with a long attic run and multiple elbows takes longer, needs roof or attic access, and sometimes needs the run opened at a joint to clear a packed section. Corroded coastal terminations can add a part if the hood is beyond cleaning. We look at the run first and tell you what it involves before we start.
